"Birds in the Classroom"
  by Adrienne Mock

Many young people today have limited or even NO access to pets. This might be due to the ecoomy (can't afford a pet), living accomodations (apartments or condos that are no-pet zones or that have limited space), medical conditions including allergies or simply not enough time. This may be especially true for children living in inner cities and other urban areas.

For many individuals, their only experience wiht birds is the wild sparrows, pigeons and blackbirds and occasional crows that frequent human cities; birds on TV and in the movies, especially animated movies, and in books.

Most education in the classroom on pet keeping and pets comes from Animal Rights groups such as PeTA and HSUS who consider pet keeping and breeding to be wrong or somehow cruel.

Bringing birds into the classroom can be a fantastic introduction to the world of birds and an open door to bird keeping and potentially breeding of various species. Physical interaction with a tame friendly
bird, whether a parrot or a hand raised finch can be an eye opening, wonderous experience for a child.

Author Bio:

Adrianne’s life has always been filled with animals – her parents bred Doberman Pinchers, and she grew up learning about animal husbandry first hand; feeding puppies, cleaning kennels and caring for the dogs. Besides the dogs, there were two squirrel monkeys, two tortoises that made walking barefoot at night not advisable, and her Dad’s several tanks full of freshwater fishes. Then there were the various orphans needing assistance- mostly birds. These were rescued, fed, and released.

After her family moved to New Jersey, more animals joined the ‘zoo’ – cats (“they found us...”), geese and ducks, and even a skunk purchased from a pet shop. “He was fun – we taught him to sit up, come when called and walk on a harness and leash” Adrianne recalls. “You could hear necks snapping as folks did a ‘double take’ after they realized it was NOT a cat.”

Save the date!

Also, WAES is collecting molted parrot feathers for The Feather Distribution Project .
